Overcoming Resentment the #1 problem emotion

In this study series we look at the problems our emotions sometimes cause us. Emotions can cause you to lose focus and become sidetracked in the unique race God has set out for you to run successfully.

Resentment is #1 problem emotion

What is resentment?

● usually not a standalone emotion. What other emotions are you feeling? The other emotions may provide clues for you to better understand what exactly you resent.

● a feeling based on a real or imagined grievance

Remember: If you don’t control your emotions they will control you.

Control isn’t burying/suppressing emotion but to set boundaries around it

Behavior reflects your response to those emotional signals

Does your behavior indicate you are in control or is your resentment in control?

Techniques to overcome resentment include:

 ● admitting to yourself that there is unresolved resentment behind your attitude about that

person, or situation;

confessing it to God and

receiving His forgiveness. 1John 1:

9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

● asking God to show you “hot buttons” that trigger resentment in you and His enabling grace to react with His strength. Philippians 4:

13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

How do you know when you are feeling resentment?

What triggers resentment in you?

What would be a more appropriate way for you to respond when you feel resentment?

  • talking it over with the Lord. Remember His words in Psalm 147:

3 He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

4 He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.

5 Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

No one better understands you than the One Who created you

● asking God’s help to let the past be the past so that it isn’t a chain around your neck anymore James 1:

5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

● listing those for whom you have resentment and asking God‘s help for forgiving

2 Corinthians 9:

8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work

Hebrews 12:

1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

So let us run the race He has set before us looking unto Jesus,
