Psalms 22 – the Great Shepherd
Psalms 22 – the Great Shepherd
According to the writer of Hebrews, Jesus is the Great Shepherd of the sheep (Hebrews 13:20). A shepherd provides protection from creatures and things that would harm; provision of needs and personal attention; direction for advancement and safety; correction. Which do you need today? What are your circumstances? What do you need from Jesus?
This psalm petitioning God, also foreshadows what our Great Shepherd endured. What can we learn from this psalm?
Cry to Jesus
1(To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.) My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
2O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
Sometimes, do you feel alone? Sometimes do you feel God does neither hear nor answer you?
Jesus, our Great Shepherd, felt forsaken when He hung on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins and my sins. Jesus completely understands the human condition and He cares.
What does it mean to you that Jesus understands the feeling of being forsaken?
Remember your history with Jesus
3But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
4Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
5They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
6But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
7All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
9But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
What has Jesus accomplished for you?
What has Jesus accomplished through you?
In what ways did Jesus help you?
Express your need for Jesus in current trouble
10I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.
11Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
12Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
13They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
15My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
19But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
20Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
21Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
Strength =physical, mental, moral power
Help = to save, to rescue, to aid
A lion is a predator, whose roar can be heard for 5 miles. On average a male lion weighs 500 lb. and can run 50 miles per hour. The lion symbolizes your enemy’s ability to swiftly remind you of the past and to frighten you for the future and about what others think of you. Remember satan wants to kill your joy, ruin your life, destroy your testimony, steal your earthly inheritance and take others down with you.
Praise Jesus
22I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
23Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
24For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
25My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
26The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
27All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
28For the kingdom is the LORD’S: and he is the governor among the nations.
29All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
30A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
31They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

Our God, our help in ages past – Isaac Watts, 1719
Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home.
Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defense is sure.
Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.
Thy Word commands our flesh to dust, “Return, ye sons of men:”
All nations rose from earth at first, And turn to earth again.
A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun.
The busy tribes of flesh and blood, With all their lives and cares,
Are carried downwards by the flood, And lost in following years.
Time, like an ever rolling stream, Bears all its sons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day.
Like flowery fields the nations stand Pleased with the morning light;
The flowers beneath the mower’s hand Lie withering ere ‘tis night.
Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home.
Our focus = Hebrews 12:1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Our challenge = Dearly Beloved,
Run with your eyes on Jesus alone!
Run in faith that Jesus loves you, has uniquely designed and created only one you, has a good plan for your life, runs with you and will accomplish His purposes for you and through you!
Run in His strength alone!
Run with your eyes on the prize!
Run with the desire to finish strong!
Run with the desire to finish with your lamp burning!
Run with the expectation of being in His physical presence when you cross your finish line!
Run to His glory alone!
Run and keep on running!

Psalms 17 – Reliance on God
Psalms 17 – Reliance on God
You and I live in a fallen creation that is no longer perfect and not even good. Sin and death have entered the world. Everyone is born with a sinful, rebellious nature. How do you manage your time? On what do you base your reliance?
Reliance = trustful dependence
Praise
1(A Prayer of David.) Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.
2Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.
3Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.
Notice that David addresses God as ‘Jehovah – the I AM’. What is the significance?
We may come boldly to His throne of grace; come boldly to Jehovah, the Almighty God; the Righteous Judge; the One Who knows all about you and me – what are our problems? What are our limitations? What are our strengths?; the One Who fully understands our circumstances and predicaments; the One Who concerns Himself with our well-being.
Prayer = devout petition to God
Sentence =opinion given on a particular question
Proved =establish the truth or genuineness of
Tried =tested and proved dependable or trustworthy
Purposed =determination, resoluteness
Transgress = to violate a law or moral code; to sin
Provision
4Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.
5Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.
6I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.
7Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.
Jehovah loves you and me with an everlasting, unconditional love. He provides His Word to keep us from the temptations and schemes of the destroyer.
He desires for you and me to call upon Him and He will hear.
Jehovah is worthy of your trust!
Protection
8Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
9From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.
10They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.
11They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth;
12Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
13Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:
14From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.
Do you remember how Jehovah saved David from his enemies?
From Goliath? (1 Samuel 17:45-51)
From Saul? (1 Samuel 24)
From Absalom? (2 Samuel 18:9-14)
Why would we expect anything less from our Savior?
Joy from God, with God
15As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
Regardless of today’s circumstances, if Jesus is your Savior and Lord, there is coming a time when you will be free from the presence of sin; free from your sin nature; robed in His righteousness; and fully awake in His physical presence!

Jesus saves!- Priscilla Owens, 1882
- We have heard the joyful sound: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Spread the tidings all around: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Bear the news to every land, Climb the mountains, cross the waves;
Onward! ’tis our Lord’s command; Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
- Waft it on the rolling tide: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Tell to sinners far and wide: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Sing, you islands of the sea; Echo back, you ocean caves;
Earth shall keep her jubilee: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
- Sing above the battle strife: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
By His death and endless life Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Shout it brightly through the gloom, When the heart for mercy craves;
Sing in triumph o’er the tomb: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
- Give the winds a mighty voice: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Let the nations now rejoice: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Shout salvation full and free; Highest hills and deepest caves;
This our song of victory: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Psalms 3 – A Morning Psalm
Every morning ushers in a new day, full of possibilities both for successes and failures. What are your first thoughts when the morning greets you? Do you think about possibilities? Do you think about problems? Do you think about your failures? Do you think about unresolved issues? Do you think about your Creator, the One Who loves you unconditionally with an everlasting love; the One Who died on the cross to redeem you from the penalty of sin’s separation and rose again for your justification; the One Who has a good plan for your life?
David was a human being, born with a sin nature just like you and me. The Bible records a song he wrote to greet the morning.
Psalms 3: The problem
1(A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.) LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.
2Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah.
You remember the story in 2 Samuel 13-15. Absalom avenged the rape of his sister, Tamar, by killing his brother Amnon, while their father, King David, did nothing but be angry. Then after 3 years in exile, King David allowed Absalom to return to Jerusalem but refused to see him for 2 more years. Now Absalom, King David’s son, was out to kill him and take the throne from him. King David fled Jerusalem and is running from his son. Do you know what it is like to have a family member want to hurt you?
Why do you think David directed his question to Jehovah, the I AM?
Are there people who think God can’t help you?
Do you ever feel so sinful that God can’t help you?
Do you ever see so much trouble and feel God can’t help you?
Where to look for protection
3But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
4I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.
Shield = a person or thing that protects
Glory =source of praise, honor, distinction
Lifter up of my head =There is a lifting up of the head by elevating to office, as with Pharaoh’s butler; There is a lifting up in honor after shame, in health after sickness, in gladness after sorrow, in restoration after a fall, in victory after a temporary defeat; in all these respects the Lord is the lifter up of your head.
The LORD is your resource
5I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.
6I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.
Sustained = to support, hold, or bear up from below; to bear the weight of; as a structure.
Notice that David chooses to not be afraid but to focus on God.
The power belongs to the LORD God
7Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.
8Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

When Morning Gilds the Skies – Germany, circa 1744
When morning gilds the skies my heart awaking cries: May Jesus Christ be praised!
Alike at work and prayer, to Jesus I repair: May Jesus Christ be praised!
When you begin the day, O never fail to say, May Jesus Christ be praised!
And at your work rejoice, to sing with heart and voice, May Jesus Christ be praised!
Whene’er the sweet church bell peals over hill and dell, May Jesus Christ be praised!
O hark to what it sings, as joyously it rings, May Jesus Christ be praised!
My tongue shall never tire of chanting with the choir, May Jesus Christ be praised!
This song of sacred joy, it never seems to cloy, May Jesus Christ be praised!
Does sadness fill my mind? A solace here I find, May Jesus Christ be praised!
Or fades my earthly bliss? My comfort still is this, May Jesus Christ be praised!
To God, the Word, on high, the host of angels cry, May Jesus Christ be praised!
Let mortals, too, upraise their voice in hymns of praise, May Jesus Christ be praised!
Be this at meals your grace, in every time and place; May Jesus Christ be praised!
Be this, when day is past, of all your thoughts the last May Jesus Christ be praised!
When mirth for music longs, this is my song of songs: May Jesus Christ be praised!
When evening shadows fall, this rings my curfew call, May Jesus Christ be praised!
When sleep her balm denies, my silent spirit sighs, May Jesus Christ be praised!
When evil thoughts molest, with this I shield my breast, May Jesus Christ be praised!
The night becomes as day when from the heart we say: May Jesus Christ be praised!
The powers of darkness fear when this sweet chant they hear: May Jesus Christ be praised!
No lovelier antiphon in all high Heav’n is known Than, Jesus Christ be praised!
There to the eternal Word the eternal psalm is heard: May Jesus Christ be praised!
Let all the earth around ring joyous with the sound: May Jesus Christ be praised!
In Heaven’s eternal bliss the loveliest strain is this: May Jesus Christ be praised!
Sing, suns and stars of space, sing, ye that see His face, Sing, Jesus Christ be praised!
God’s whole creation o’er, for aye and evermore Shall Jesus Christ be praised!
In Heav’n’s eternal bliss the loveliest strain is this, May Jesus Christ be praised!
Let earth, and sea and sky from depth to height reply, May Jesus Christ be praised!
Be this, while life is mine, my canticle divine: May Jesus Christ be praised!
Sing this eternal song through all the ages long: May Jesus Christ be praised!

Did Jesus ever feel tempted to sin?
In this series we have examined which emotions the Bible documents Jesus felt while limiting Himself to a human body with physical needs, a geographical location and a point in time. We looked at the situations where Jesus felt agony, anger, bearing with others, compassion, constraint, grief, forsaken, hunger and thirst, spurned love, loving someone who wanted Him to be other than Who He is, loving someone who wanted Him to do other than what He did, sighing, sorrow, weeping.
Did Jesus ever feel tempted to sin? We know that Jesus was not born in the image of Adam, with a sin nature. He was born like the first Adam’s original state with God as His Father. We know that He was in the wilderness to be tempted.
Definition
Tempted= enticed or allured to do something often regarded as unwise, wrong, or immoral.
Situation
Matthew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
We see that Jesus was exactly where God wanted Him to be.
We see the tempter tried to entice Him with physical needs, questions on God’s faithfulness, the allure of power and prestige.
For each temptation, Jesus was ready, armed with the Word of God.
We do not read that Jesus ever felt like submitting to the temptation to do wrong.
We do not read that Jesus struggled with the decision whether or not to submit to the temptation.
But we see that Jesus faced the temptations successfully. He knows what we are up against.
He knows the allure of temptations of needs, trust, power and prestige
He knows He loves you. He cares for you. He stands ready to help you. You don’t need to explain anything to Him. Jesus completely understands you.
Jesus is our great High Priest
Hebrews 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
15For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
When you consider the emotion of Jesus, can you relate how He must have felt to what you feel in your situation? Can you see how this experience of Jesus enables Him to fully understand how you feel?

Definition
Weeping = expressing grief, sorrow, or any overwhelming emotion by shedding tears
Situation #1
Luke 19:35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.
36And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.
37And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
38Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
39And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
40And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
41And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
42Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
43For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
44And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

How long did Jesus weep?
What is the longest you ever wept? Why?

In this session we examine Jesus experiencing the emotion of sorrow
Do you know sorrow? Jesus completely understands. He cares for you.
Definition
Sorrowful = full of grief, mournful, distressed
What makes you sorrowful?
How often have you been sorrowful?
Situation
Let’s look at Matthew’s record of the situation.
Matthew 26:36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
37And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
38Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
Why was Jesus sorrowful?
What does it mean to feel ‘very heavy’?
Why do you think Jesus attached the sorrow to His soul?
What is the degree of Jesus’ sorrow?
Why would Jesus want His disciples to watch with Him?
Let’s look at Mark’s record of the situation.
Mark 14:33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;
34And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.
35And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
36And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
What do you think it means to be ‘sore amazed’ and ‘very heavy’?
Have you ever felt ‘sore amazed’ and ‘very heavy’?
When you consider the emotion of Jesus, can you relate how He must have felt to what you feel in your situation? Can you see how this experience of Jesus enables Him to fully understand how you feel?

Emotions of Jesus – Sighing
Do you ever feel all alone with your emotions, having no one to understand what you feel nor why you feel that way? In this series we examine the emotions Jesus Christ felt when He was on earth, limited to a time in history, a geographical place, and a human body that needed water, food and sleep. We will examine the emotions Jesus experienced in specific situations; and why His emotional experiences enable Him to understand everything you and I feel. He is our help in time of trouble.
Remember:
Your emotions are God-given, you are entitled to them.
Your emotions are personal. No one can tell you how you should feel.
Your emotions must be managed or they will control you.
You are not responsible for someone else’s emotions.
Definition
Sighing = to let out one’s breath audibly, as from sorrow, weariness, or relief. to yearn or long; to pine.
What type of things make you sigh?
Situation #1
Mark 7:32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
33And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
34And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
35And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
36And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
37And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
Why did Jesus sigh?
Do you think Jesus was sorrowful, weary or relieved?
Do you think Jesus was longing or pining and if so, for what?
Situation #2
Mark 8:10 And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.
11And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.
12And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.
13And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.
Why did Jesus sigh?
Do you think Jesus was sorrowful, weary or relieved?
Do you think Jesus was longing or pining and if so, for what?
Situation #3
John 11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
34And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35Jesus wept.
36Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
Do you consider ‘sighing’ the same as ‘groaning in the spirit’?
What does ‘groaning in the spirit’ mean to you?
Why did Jesus ‘groan in the spirit’?
Do you ever ‘groan in the spirit’? Why?
Do you think Jesus was sorrowful, weary or relieved?
Do you think Jesus was longing or pining and if so, for what?
When you consider the emotion of Jesus, can you relate how He must have felt to what you feel in your situation? Can you see how this experience of Jesus enables Him to fully understand how you feel?

Definition
Rejoicing = the feeling or the expression of joy
What makes you feel joy? Surprises? Sunsets? People? Things?
When did you most recently feel joy? Why?
Jesus understands your feeling of joy. He cares about you.
Situation
Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
20Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
21In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
22All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
23And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
24For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
Why was Jesus rejoicing?
Do you see in this situation the concern of Jesus for babes?
Who do you think Jesus considers babes to be?
What does this revealing to babes and concealing from the wise and prudent tell us about Jesus?
When you consider the emotion of Jesus, can you relate how He must have felt to what you feel in your situation? Can you see how this experience of Jesus enables Him to fully understand how you feel?

Definition
Thirst – a physical condition resulting from a sensation of dryness in the mouth and throat caused by the need of liquid in varying degrees.
Some facts found on the internet concerning the human body and water
The human body can last weeks without food, but only days without water.
The body is made up of 50 to 75 per cent water.
Water forms the basis of blood, digestive juices, urine and perspiration.
The body can’t store water.
The body needs water every day to make up for losses from the lungs, skin, urine, excrement.
While thirst is a physical condition, wouldn’t you agree thirst is something we can feel?
Why would our Creator put Himself into a human body with physical needs?
How many times have you been thirsty?
When do you feel most thirsty?
When you wake up in the morning? Before lunch? Before the dinner hour.
The physical need for water can affect your decision-making and emotional control.
Jesus completely understands. Because He was thirsty too.
Situation
John 19: 23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother,Woman, behold thy son!
27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
28After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Why do you think Jesus waited until all the scripture was fulfilled before He voiced His need for water?
How would you like to drink vinegar instead of water?
What was the condition of Jesus’ body at this time?
Although all four gospels record the giving of vinegar, only John records Jesus’ thirst. Why do you think that is?
What does the thirst of Jesus mean to you?
When you consider the emotion of Jesus, can you relate how He must have felt to what you feel in your situation? Can you see how this experience of Jesus enables Him to fully understand how you feel?

Definition
Hunger=a compelling need or desire for food.the painful sensation or state of weakness caused by the need of food
While hunger is a physical condition, wouldn’t you agree hunger is something we can feel?
Why would our Creator put Himself into a human body with physical needs?
How many times have you been hungry?
When do you feel most hunger?
When you wake up in the morning? Before lunch? Before the dinner hour.
The physical need for food can affect your decision-making and emotional control.
Jesus completely understands. Because He was hungry at least twice.
Situation #1
Mark 11:9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
10Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
11And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.
12And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:
13And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
14And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.
Can you understand this feeling of Jesus? I know theologians have said this situation portrays the feelings of Jesus as He looked for fruit in the Jewish people and found none. But let’s just focus on the physical need for food to relieve hunger.
Situation #2
Matthew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Fasting is a voluntary abstinence from food. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He voluntarily fasted 40 days and nights. How hungry do you think He would be?
We will talk about temptation in a future session but for now let’s focus on the hunger.
Can you understand the love our Creator shows in limiting Himself to a human body with physical needs?
What does His love for you mean to you?
When you consider the emotion of Jesus, can you relate how He must have felt to what you feel in your situation? Can you see how these two experiences of Jesus enables Him to fully understand how you feel?
