Identity Lie Example #7
Man was created in the image of God. Because your identity is so closely linked to God’s identity, when you can’t see yourself clearly for who you are in Jesus Christ, you cannot see God clearly for Who He really is. Also, when you cannot see God clearly for Who He is, you cannot see yourself clearly for who you are in Jesus Christ.
Because satan opposes you and your growth as a Christian, his desire is to disarm you and separate you from Jesus Christ by enticing you into sin. He is definitely your adversary.
Adversary = a person or force that opposes or attacks; enemy; foe
God begins His written information about us with these words in Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Jesus said these words in John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly
Certainly, satan’s lies intensify the pain of living here. In this series we examine some of the common identity lies and reference what the Bible provides to refute those lies.
Today we will examine identity lie #7 and what God provides for you to refute that lie
You cannot handle what happened to you
When you believe that lie about who you are, you are also believing this lie about Who God is
God will not or cannot help you overcome your past
But Your God, Jesus Christ, provides this tool in His Word for you to refute the lie
Does God care that someone or something has hurt you or even devastated you? Absolutely. We live in a fallen creation. Look what he says in Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
As I think on those verses, this song comes to mind.
Tell it to Jesus
Are you weary, are you heavy hearted? Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
Are you grieving over joys departed? Tell it to Jesus alone.
Chorus
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus, He is a Friend that’s well known.
You’ve no other such a friend or brother, Tell it to Jesus alone.
Do the tears flow down your cheeks unbidden? Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
Have you sins that to men’s eyes are hidden? Tell it to Jesus alone.
Do you fear the gathering clouds of sorrow? Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
Are you anxious what shall be tomorrow? Tell it to Jesus alone.
Here is what He provides for you in Romans 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
So put God’s Word in your arsenal of God’s truths to counter the identity lies your enemy throws at you, by writing them on an index card; keeping them at your fingertips; reciting them aloud; committing them to memory; meditating on them. Trust Jesus Christ. He never fails and certainly will not fail you! He is our Immanuel, God with us.
These seven identity lie examples have been given and refuted with the Word of Jesus Christ. They are just examples. Perhaps there is another lie about your identity that satan uses to discourage and attempt to defeat you. I find no Bible reference indicating the enemy can read your thoughts but certainly he has all of history to observe the human condition and test his various lies. He knows your history. Although the enemy is not present everywhere he has emissaries who spy for him.
Is there a lie about your identity that you are believing?
Why do you believe it?
Did someone in authority or important to you, tell you that lie?
Are you willing to use God’s Word to refute that lie?
Remember God’s promise in Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
Use His Word to refute your enemy’s lie!
Dearly Beloved,
Run with your eyes on Jesus alone!
Run in faith that Jesus loves you, has uniquely designed and created only one you, has a good plan for your life, runs with you and will accomplish His purposes for you and through you!
Run in His strength alone!
Run with your eyes on the prize!
Run with the desire to finish strong!
Run with the desire to finish with your lamp burning!
Run with the expectation of being in His physical presence when you cross your finish line!
Run to His glory alone!

You cannot be forgiven
When you believe that lie about who you are, you are also believing this lie about Who God is
God’s redemption is not enough for you
Each of us has done things we regret and perhaps are ashamed of doing. Our sins are no surprise to Jesus. His love has no conditions so He doesn’t love us less when we sin. Jesus has provided the solution to our sin problem.
Jesus is the solution to our sin problem according 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Jesus provides for your refuting the lie that you cannot be forgiven in 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
Psalms 103:10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
There was a time when I worried about the words of Micah 7:18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
I worried because my sins were somewhere – in the depths of the sea. Granted, no human being would find them there but God could see them there, I thought. Our Jesus is so intimate and so concerned for our well-being. He showed me this verse in Revelation 21:
I share this story not at all because of any worthiness or any special knowledge on my part but as an encouragement from one sinner to another. Jesus cares and has provided the complete solution for all our sins!
Jesus Saves – William J. Kirkpatrick, 1882
We have heard a joyful sound Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Spread the tidings all around Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Bear the news to every land-Climb the steeps and cross the waves
Onward! ‘tis our Lord’s command. Jesus saves!
Sing above the battle’s strife Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
By his death and endless life Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Sing it softly through the gloom. When the heart for mercy craves
Sing in triumph o’er the tomb Jesus saves!
Give the winds a mighty voice Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Let the nations now rejoice Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Shout salvation full and free -Highest hills and deepest caves
This our song of victory Jesus saves!
So put God’s Word in your arsenal of God’s truths to counter the identity lies your enemy throws at you, by writing them on an index card; keeping them at your fingertips; reciting them aloud; committing them to memory; meditating on them. Identity Lie Example #5
Today we will examine identity lie #5 and what God provides for you to refute that lie
You cannot forgive
When you believe that lie about who you are, you are also believing this lie about Who God is
God is unable or unwilling to help you forgive
For you to refute that identity lie, your God, Jesus Christ, provides this tool in James 1: 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Also, in 2 Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
We live in an imperfect world, a fallen creation. Sin and death have entered the world. There is pain, disappointment, discouragement. People hurt us, sometimes intentionally and sometimes unaware. But to run your race well, you cannot be beset or weighed down with an unforgiving heart. Forgiveness is a two-way street. If you do not forgive you will be tied to that event, unable to move beyond it. Ask Jesus to help you forgive and move on and then trust Him to come through for you. He will not fail.
Remember His words from Hebrews 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
Remember, all sin has consequences. The person who hurt you will suffer God’s consequences. God cares about you and what happened to you.
These seven examples have been given and refuted with the Word of Jesus Christ. They are just examples.

Your feelings do not matter to God
When you believe that lie about who you are, you also believe this lie about Who God is:
God doesn’t know or care how you feel
But your God, Jesus, has planned for your defense against this identity lie. In the Bible He provides you these words from Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Also, in Psalms 139:13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
Here is what your God, Jesus Christ, provides in Psalms 56:8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me
And your God, Jesus Christ, provides these truths in Malachi 3:16 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.

“You are less than everyone else”
When you believe that identity lie about yourself, you are also believing this identity lie about God
“God shortchanged you”
But your God, Jesus Christ, loves you and has a good plan for you. He knows more about you than you know about yourself. He chooses to place His hand on you. He designed and created you. He provides these words to refute your enemy’s lies.
Psalms 139:1 (To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.) O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
Your God, Jesus, has created you as a wondrous, unique work. He never makes junk. He designed your genes and your DNA. He designed your talents, strengths and limitations. He has more thoughts of you than the number of sands on the seashore. He provides these words for you to use to refute your enemy’s identity lies in Psalms 139:
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
At last night’s Prayer Meeting at the church I attend, we sang this song and the words to the 3rd verse are ringing in my mind. I share them with you.
Higher Ground
I want to live above the world Tho’ satan’s darts at me are hurled
For faith has caught the joyful sound -The song of saints on higher ground.
Chorus:
Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith on heaven’s table land
A higher plane than I have found Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
Remember God’s promise in Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

Your hopes and dreams do not matter to God
When you believe that lie, you are believing this lie about God:
God’s loving care for mankind does not mean you specifically
Jesus provides your answer in Matthew 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
Notice, He did not refer to any of the pretty birds, nor to the giant birds, nor to the majestic birds. He referred to the small, brown sparrow to illustrate His love for all His creation.
Do you know the number of hairs on your head? Do you realize the number changes multiple times during each day? How familiar with you must He be to know at any moment more about you than you know?
So put God’s Word in your arsenal of God’s truths to counter the identity lies your enemy throws at you, by writing them on an index card; keeping them at your fingertips; reciting them aloud; committing them to memory; meditating on them. Identity Lie Example #1
The first lie of the enemy we will refute today, using God’s Word, is this one:
“You must earn love”
Sometimes this lie is presented as: “You are not worth loving”
When you believe that lie you are believing this lie about God:
God’s love has conditions
But our God, Who is all-knowing (omniscient) already provided the tools you need to refute that lie. Jeremiah 33:3The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee.
Paul asked and answered the question: What shall separate us from the love of God? Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
So put God’s Word in your arsenal, by memorizing it; writing it on an index card and prominently display it. Trust Him, He never fails and will not fail you!
Remember God’s promise in Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
Use His Word to refute your enemy’s lie!
The words to this song have been playing in my head so I share them with you.
Army of the Lord
All around us a war’s going on between the wrong and the right
We’ve gotta choose which side we’re on-the darkness or the light
Some of the soldiers of the Lord just don’t realize
that the captain of the army of darkness has come to blind their eyes
Can’t you see that we’re in a battle and there’s no place to hide?
The shields of faith are full of darts and their shooting from every side
Just shake out the darts and run right at em’ and remember who you’re fighting for
Don’t fall asleep cuz’ if they catch ya’ they’ll take you prisoner of war
Chorus:
Are we walking into the enemy’s camp, laying our weapons down
shedding our armor as we go, leaving it on the ground?
We’ve gotta be strong in the power of His might and prove to the enemy
We are the army of the Lord and we’ve won the victory.
Dearly Beloved,
Run with your eyes on Jesus alone!
Run in faith that Jesus loves you, has uniquely designed and created only one you, has a good plan for your life, runs with you and will accomplish His purposes for you and through you!

Identity Lies Introduction
Man was created in the image of God. Because your identity is so closely linked to God’s identity, when you can’t see yourself clearly for who you are in Jesus Christ, you cannot see God clearly for Who He really is. Also, when you cannot see God clearly for Who He is, you cannot see yourself clearly for who you are in Jesus Christ.
God begins His written information about us with these words in Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
But man disobeyed God’s law and sin entered the world, documented in Genesis 3.1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
As a result of their disobedience, death fell on all of us.
1) The relationship between God and man changed
You and I can have no face-to-face contact with God – Exodus 33:18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
You and I need Jesus to take away the enmity between us and God according to Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
2) You and I live in a fallen creation. Death entered the world.1 Corinthians 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
3) You and I are born with a fallen nature, in Adam’s likeness, therefore, we misuse our ability to choose – Genesis 5:3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:
4) The prince of the power of the air works in unbelievers- Ephesians 2:
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
5) satan has a game-plan to destroy you and me with lies – 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Jesus said these words in John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly
Certainly, satan’s lies intensify the pain of living here. In this series we will examine some of the common identity lies and reference what the Bible says to refute those lies.

What were Jesus’ last words before He came to earth as a man?
Jesus left Heaven for a mission. He had a plan before the foundation of the world. He loved His creation so much that He gave mankind free will and mankind chose to rebel. Consequently, sin and death entered creation and all are born with that sinful, rebellious nature after the image of Adam, the first man. When Jesus left the splendor and glory of Heaven to fulfill His plan to redeem His creation and to limit Himself to a time, a place and a human body, what were His parting words? Did He speak of loss? Did He speak of sorrow? Did He speak of an unwilling heart? Why did the angels sing and glorify God at the birth of Jesus?
The Bible records what would be those parting words some 1,000 years before they were spoken.
Psalm 40:
5Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
6Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
7Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
8I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
Delight = to have great pleasure, enjoyment, satisfaction
What do His words mean to you?
The Bible expounds on the meaning of those words some 65 years after they were spoken.
Hebrews 10:
4For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
5Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
6In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
7Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
8Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
9Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
What do His words mean to you?
What is the significance of Jesus offering His body for you?
What does it mean to you to be sanctified, set apart for His service?
Hark the Herald Angels Sing – Charles Wesley
Christ, by highest Heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord:
Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of a Virgin’s womb!
Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with men to appear, Jesus! Our Immanuel!
Hark! the Herald Angels Sing Glory to the new-born King.
Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth; Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the Herald Angels Sing Glory to the new-born King.
Come, Desire of nations, come, Fix in us Thy humble home;
Rise, the woman’s conquering seed, Bruise in us the serpent’s head.
Adam’s likeness now efface; Stamp Thine image in its place.
Second Adam from above, Reinstate us in Thy love.
Hark! the Herald Angels Sing Glory to the new-born King.
Hebrews 12:
Dearly Beloved,
Run with your eyes on Jesus alone!
Run in faith that Jesus loves you with an everlasting, unconditional love; has uniquely designed and created only one you; has a good plan for your life; runs with you; and will accomplish His purposes for you and through you!
Run in His strength alone!
Run with your eyes on the prize!
Run with your focus on His mission: to conform you to the image of Jesus Christ!
Run with the desire to finish strong!
Run with the desire to finish with your lamp burning!
Run with the expectation of being in His physical presence when you cross your finish line!
Run to His glory alone!
Run and keep on running!

Facing Your Future with 5 Words
The year 2016 is upon us. What will it bring? Will there be special celebrations for you? Will you earn special awards and achievements? What will it be? How will you live it?
Paul provides us with 5 special words for facing our futures and daily living. But before we look at those 5 special words, let’s look at two thoughts.
Thought #1 – Ephesians 2:
8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Jesus, Who saved you by grace, is in control, has a good plan for your life and is developing you
What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ has complete control?
What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ has a good plan for your life?
What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ is developing you? He is your life coach.
Thought #2 – Hebrews 13:
5Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you. Live accordingly!
What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ will never leave you?
What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ will never forsake you?
Paul’s 5 words – faith which works by love
Galatians 5:1Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
2Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
3For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
4Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
5For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
6For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Faith = substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen
Love =God is love
It was a Sunday afternoon, January 1956, when these 5 missionaries trying to share the gospel with the Aucas in Ecuador sang this song, not knowing they would each cross over their finish lines, into the physical presence of Jesus Christ, due to martyrdom, later that day; Jim Elliott, Nate Saint, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Roger Youderian.
We Rest on Thee – Edith Cherry, 1895
We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender!
We go not forth alone against the foe;
Strong in Thy strength, safe in Thy keeping tender,
We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.
Yes, in Thy Name, O Captain of salvation!
In Thy dear Name, all other names above;
Jesus our Righteousness, our sure Foundation,
Our Prince of glory and our King of love.
We go in faith, our own great weakness feeling,And needing more each day Thy grace to know:
Yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing,
“We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.”
We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender!
Thine is the battle, Thine shall be the praise;
When passing through the gates of pearly splendor,
Victors, we rest with Thee, through endless days.
