Paul’s reasons for hope
How many difficulties in Paul’s life do you remember?
He made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison
He breathed threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord and went unto the high priest, desiring of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.
He received 39 stripes by the Jews five times
He was beaten with rods
He was stoned
He was shipwrecked
He was imprisoned
Look at the reasons he gives us for hope.
Jesus Christ is the God of hope – Romans 15:
God = the one Supreme Being, the Creator and Ruler of the universe.
Hope = the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best
Fill = put into as much as can be held; supply to an extreme degree

satisfying
Peace= freedom from commotion and violence; order and security
Abound = to occur or exist in great quantities, well supplied; filled
Using these word definitions what does this verse mean to you?
What about Jesus Christ gives you the most joy?

In what way do you see yourself abounding in hope?
Is there some circumstance that prevents Jesus from filling you with hope? Talk to Him about it.
Is there an attitude you need to change? Talk to Jesus about it. He cares about you!
He loves, justifies, provides peace with God and access to grace – Romans 5:
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

How many difficulties of King David’s life do you remember?
He ran and hid from King Saul

Israel suffered because of that murder
His daughter was raped by his son

He fled Jerusalem from his son, Absalom
Let’s look at the reasons King David gives for hope.
the LORD’s presence provides security- Psalms 16:
5 The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.
7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.
8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

You are the Masterpiece of Jesus Christ
You and I live in a fallen creation. Sin and death have entered the world. Everyone is born with a sinful, rebellious nature. But when you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior He creates you new and begins a good work in you. You are precious and very valuable to Jesus Christ. He loves you with an unconditional, everlasting love.
Where are you today? Do you see yourself as valuable or junk? perfect or flawed?
You still have free will. The choice to focus on Him not the waves around you is yours. The choice to submit to Him and His perfect will for your life is yours. The choice to trust Him or yourself is yours.
Here are some of His words to help you focus on Him today.
Jesus Christ designed your physical attributes, your strengths, your limitations, your talents-Isaiah 64:
Jesus Christ has a specific destiny for you –Romans 8:
What differences do you suppose there will be in your life as Jesus conforms you more and more to His image?

MANAGING THE EMOTION OF REGRET
Regret can be a powerful, almost consuming emotion. Regret can be wishing you had done something you didn’t do or wishing you had not done something you did do. Regret can also be wishing something had happened when it did not or wishing something had not happened that did happen.
The Christian life is a growing process, not to be evaluated by physical age or length of time you have been a Christian. Through that growing process, Jesus Christ is actively working to make you more like Himself. So wisdom regarding how to handle yourself, your behavior and your reaction to circumstances you cannot control will increase with the more time you share with Jesus Christ.
Remember you are not alone! – Hebrews 13:
You do not have to explain anything to Jesus. You do not have to bring Him up to speed on anything. He already knows all about the thing you regret and He even understands your regret.
You are His creation. He knows you well. He loves you unconditionally with an everlasting love. Notice His promises to never leave you and to never forsake you.
What do those promises mean to you right now?
Remember Jesus Christ is still working on you! – Philippians 1:
Remember Jesus Christ gives mercy and instruction-Psalm 32:
8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
What instruction do you sense Him giving you about your regret?

Jesus Christ: Captain of your salvation
You and I live in a fallen creation. Sin and death have entered the world. Everyone is born with a rebellious sin nature. No one can see God face-to-face as Adam and Eve did and live. Sometimes the storms of life seem overwhelming. We ask ‘where is Jesus’? Does He really know and care about our hurts? In this study we will examine what the Bible says Jesus is doing, even when life hurts you.
We begin Section #1 with what Jesus is doing for you when life hurts.
Session #1: Serving as the Captain of your Salvation
What is a captain?
Captain = one in authority over others, leader
What are some leadership qualities you would expect in your Captain?
Points in salvation
You and I are saved from the penalty of sin by the death and resurrection of our Captain Jesus Christ. Someday you and I will be saved from the very presence of sin by the death and resurrection of our Captain Jesus Christ. Between these two points in salvation, you and I are being saved from the pattern and habit of sin by our Captain Jesus Christ.
In the process of salvation from the pattern and habit of sin, Jesus Christ stands as your Captain.
Hebrews 2:
13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
Salvation is offered to everyone but always received by choice
Jesus Christ is your personal Captain of Salvation that means relationship; intimate knowledge of
you, your circumstances, your strengths, your limitations, your talents, your spiritual gifts,
your frame of reference, your history, your self-image and self-awareness, your
understanding of and ability to control your emotions, your dreams and aspirations, your
knowledge of scripture
Your Captain of Salvation
- Your Captain has already crossed His finish line and received the glory and honor of victory. He is experienced in living on the earth and He is successful
- Your Captain is ordained; i.e. predestined by God
- Your Captain is fully equipped because of His suffering: He understands, He won the victory
- Your Captain will bring you to glory; i.e. home and victory- Matthew 16:
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
- Your Captain makes all arrangements for your march: provisions, strategy, route
He will not be surprised nor out-maneuvered

Jesus Christ: Man of Sorrow, Giver of Joy
During His first coming to earth, Jesus Christ was both a man of sorrow and a giver of joy.
How is it possible for the man of sorrow to not only have joy but to also give joy? In this session, we focus on Jesus Christ the giver of joy
What is joy?
Joy-the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure

The joy of Jesus Christ was predicted in the 8th century BC. Isaiah 53:
Jesus Christ endured the cross because He was looking at you and me, all those through the centuries who would trust Him for salvation.
On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus Christ spoke about His joy. John 16:

1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

Getting to know God as your Father – the Father of Lights
Maybe you had a great relationship with your earthly father and maybe you did not. Maybe your relationship with your earthly father is on-going. Research shows the father in the home is a child’s first example of authority. Many impressions of God stem from your impression of your father. This study seeks to acquaint you with facts about God as your Father and to spark joy in your heart for Who God is and how He desires a fatherly relationship with you.
James 1:
A gift is given by choice not by obligation or requirement and not with strings
What good gifts has God, your Father, given you? Salvation, the Comforter, an inheritance
Notice God, your Father gives good and perfect gifts.
Notice the gifts come down to you because God, your Father, rules over all with all authority and dwells high above in the perfect Heaven.
What does that tell you about God, your Father?
God covers Himself with light as a garment – Psalms 104:

1-Removal from darkness – John 12:
44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
2-Overcoming darkness-John 1:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Comprehend – scatter, suppress, neutralize, absorb, apprehend
Darkness is disastrous, prolonged, targeted but never triumphant

The duration of the light – John 9:

Managing your role in forgiveness – When you need to forgive yourself
You and I live in an imperfect world. Sin and death have entered this fallen creation. Each of us has done wrong. We make mistakes. We are not perfect. We are all sinners saved only by the grace of Jesus Christ. Many of us have regrets. Regrets for things we did and regrets for things we did not do. When you hang onto those regrets you give the enemy a tool to attack and defeat you..
1) Confess to Jesus Christ – 1 John 1:
Tell Jesus Christ what you did, why you did it and that you know it was wrong
Ask His forgiveness – He won’t punish, ridicule or be surprised. His love is unconditional!
Receive His forgiveness and His cleansing
Be thankful for your Savior
- Accept that your debt has been paid in full -Colossians 2:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
- Be Humble
Remember who you are – Psalms 103:
10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

4 Let your actions give evidence of a new attitude
5) Leave the results to Jesus Christ – Psalms 1:

Jesus Christ appoints the time your efforts will bear fruit
A leaf evidences life – your new life in Jesus will not wither!
When you live Jesus Christ’s way, your life will be all He intends it to be!!

Jesus Christ returns in the clouds – 2nd event
The Bible predicts two returns of Jesus Christ to the earth. Both events will involve the clouds. The two events are separated by 7 years. The two events are for different purposes. The two events have different consequences. The two events affect the entire world population.
The 2nd return of Jesus Christin the clouds will be seen by all and will be for judgment
The promise when Jesus Christ left the earth- Acts 1:
Jesus Christ predicted His second return to earth- Matthew 24:
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
